The axle shaft seal is placed in the axle housing of a rigid differential to seal around the axle shaft. An axle seal allows the axle shaft to stay lubricated without leaking gear oil onto the wheels or ground. Like most seals, an axle seal can fail over time. This can be caused by age, lack of lubrication, or wear from the axle itself. If you notice grease leaking from around your wheels or behind your brakes, this may point to a problem with the axle seal. You may also experience issues with your axle itself, or notice noises from your differential. This can be due to low gear oil levels. The axle seal may be the source of the leak.
