A four-wheel drive actuator is a component of your four-wheel drive (4WD) system that automatically locks the hubs. These actuators are either vacuum operated or electronic, and take the place of manual locking hubs. When you engage your four-wheel drive, the transfer case shifts to also drive the front wheels. The four-wheel drive actuator then locks the differential to supply power to both front wheels. A nonworking four-wheel drive actuator may lack vacuum or electrical signal, or may be damaged or worn out. A failing four-wheel drive actuator may not consistently engage or disengage the four wheel drive when needed.
