The expansion valve relieves pressure from refrigerant to allow it to change from a liquid to a vapor. This allows the refrigerant to cool before entering the evaporator. It also meters the amount of refrigerant transferred to the evaporator to avoid freezing. On some vehicles, these tasks are handled by the orifice tube instead of an expansion valve. The A/C system blowing warm air can be caused by many parts, including a bad expansion valve. Frost may form on the evaporator and blow out of the vents, or the compressor may run constantly.
