The ambient air temperature sensor, or outside air temperature sensor, measures the temperature of the air outside as a voltage. This is then interpreted by the vehicle's computer as a temperature and displayed on your dash. The air temperature sensor is commonly located behind the grille. Due to the heat from your engine, the road, or sunlight, it is normal for the sensor to be a few degrees off. However, if the readings are consistently wrong, you may need a replacement. An open or short circuit can cause the sensor to read at its lowest or highest temperature, either around forty below zero or up to around 120 degrees on many vehicles.
