Distributor

The ignition system is made up of several parts including one or more ignition coils, wires or boots, and spark plugs. In older ignition systems, a distributor was used to allocate the power from the coil to the appropriate spark plug. The distributor is turned by a gear attached to a rod which is powered by the camshaft. This keeps the distributor in time with the cam so the spark is created at the right time for combustion. Problems with the distributor could include misfires, a lack of ignition, or incorrect timing. Most distributors' timing can be adjusted, but if it is no longer turning or sending spark, the cylinders won’t fire when they need to.
