AT Detent/Kickdown Cable

The detent cable or linkage connects your carburetor or throttle body to your transmission. Also called a kickdown, the detent cable activates at full throttle to shift the transmission into a lower gear. This is especially useful when climbing hills or needing to quickly accelerate to pass someone on the highway. If the kickdown or detent cable is corroded or damaged, it may not move freely, and would be unable to shift the transmission. This may cause sluggish acceleration even at high RPMs, and make it more difficult to climb uphill. Though some automatic transmissions can be shifted manually to a lower gear, replacing your detent cable is often the only way to fix this problem.
