Cooling fans are used to pull air through the radiator to cool both the radiator and the engine whehn the car idles. As opposed to electric cooling fans, mechanical clutch fans are often used on older vehicles. These are mounted to the water pump or other pulleys to run the fan. Vehicle manufacturers use fan spacers to maintain the correct distance from the radiator.
