Intake Manifold Runner Control Valve

The intake manifold distributes air from the throttle body to the individual cylinders to be mixed with fuel and ignited. Each passage of the intake manifold is called a runner, and in modern vehicles, the runner can be adjustable, controlled by a valve. The intake runner control valve diverts air to longer, narrow runners during low RPMs, and shorter, wider runners for higher RPMs. Each intake runner control valve is controlled by the ECU for precise timing to maximize performance and efficiency. If a runner control valve is stuck, it can cause too much or too little air to enter the cylinder, negatively affecting performance and fuel economy. This may also illuminate the Check Engine light.
