Universal joints, or U-joints, are found in most all-wheel, four-wheel, and rear-wheel drive vehicles. They allow the driveshaft or axle shaft change angles as the vehicle goes over bumps or uneven places in the road. Most new vehicle U-joints are greased from the factory and are not serviceable. Most aftermarket U-joints feature grease fittings for service. Adding new grease lubricates the needle bearings and pushes contaminants out. The most common sign of U-joint bearing failure is clunking when shifting from park to drive or reverse. Other signs of failure are also vibrations felt under your seat or a rhythmic clicking or squeak that increases with speed. Ignoring these symptoms could lead to your driveshaft separating entirely from your vehicle, causing serious damage.
