Cooling System

If your vehicle is going to keep running strong, it’s essential to keep your cooling system healthy; it is the temperature regulator for the engine, keeping things cool in the summer and warm in the winter. A properly maintained cooling system will help your vehicle run at full efficiency.

Overheating Cooling System
Signs and Symptoms
Because the cooling system affects everything from your defroster to fuel mileage, routine maintenance will help you extend the life of your engine and avoid costly repairs. Here are some problems to keep an eye out for:

  • Overheating: This is the most common cooling system failure. Possible causes include: water pump failure, cooling fan malfunction, thermostat failure, belt failure, restricted air flow to the radiator, and low coolant level.
  • Leaks: Antifreeze/coolant puddles are the most common indicator of this issue, but some leaks can be difficult to find. When filling your system, be sure to use the coolant specified for your vehicle. If you use Concentrate instead of 50/50 formula, use distilled water.
  • Underheating: This issue is not as common, but can be easily identified if your temperature gauge reads low or if your heater isn’t blowing warm air. This is most commonly caused by low coolant levels or thermostat failure.
  • Temperature Fluctuation: If your vehicle’s temperature is rising and falling unpredictably during operation, it’s likely your coolant level is low. When filling your system, be sure to use the coolant specified for your vehicle. If you use Concentrate instead of 50/50 formula, use distilled water.
