Newer vehicles feature electric cooling fans controlled by a relay, but older vehicles are likely equipped with a clutch style fan. The cooling fan clutch is part of the cooling system that engages or disengages the fan depending on the engine temperature. It is typically bolted between the water pump pulley and the fan. When a fan clutch goes bad, your fan may run at all times, or it may not run at all. This may cause overheating, poor gas mileage, or excessive noise. You may also notice slower acceleration and a loss of power. If you are experiencing these issues, your fan clutch may need to be replaced.
