What is the Right Type of Oil for My Vehicle?

To avoid engine overheating or damage, it is vital to regularly change a vehicle’s motor oil and oil filter. Oil changes help to prevent engine wear and tear, and flush out harmful contaminants and debris. Motor oil is an inexpensive maintenance item that helps lubricate and protect your engine from much more expensive damage and failure. It is recommended to change a vehicle’s conventional oil either every 3 months, or every 3,000 miles, whichever comes first; synthetic oil should be maintenanced every 5,000 miles, or every six months, whichever comes sooner. For vehicles that are in storage, an oil change may be necessary before running the vehicle to drain accumulated moisture in the oil pan.

Engine oil viscosity, or the flow, is the oil’s resistance when being poured at a certain temperature. A lower viscosity, found in conventional oils, help engines to start easily during cold weather, while a higher viscosity, akin to diesel oil, is designed to maintain its strength and integrity under high temperatures and heavy payloads. Viscosity is indicated by the classification “#W-##”; the two numbers that follow the ‘W’ denote the oil’s flow at zero degrees Fahrenheit, and the lower the number, the thicker the oil becomes in a cold-weather climate. When comparing oils and their viscosities, it is critical to consider the environment in which the oil will be used; for hotter climates, a higher viscosity is more applicable, while lower climates are recommended a low-viscosity oil.
